Key Stage 1 Primary Resources
Key Stage 1 (KS1) is the first phase of primary education in England, designed for children aged 5 to 7 years old, typically covering Year 1 and Year 2. During this stage, children continue to develop the foundational skills they began learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception). KS1 provides the essential building blocks for future learning, with a focus on developing literacy, numeracy, curiosity, and confidence.
What do children learn in Key Stage 1?
In Key Stage 1, children follow the National Curriculum, which includes a range of core and foundation subjects. These subjects are designed to support both academic and personal development.
-
English – children learn to read fluently, write clearly, and communicate effectively. They build phonics knowledge, spelling skills, grammar understanding, and a love for stories and books.
-
Mathematics – children develop number sense, learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and begin exploring shapes, measures, and simple problem-solving.
-
Science – children explore the world around them through hands-on investigations. Topics may include Seasonal Changes, Animals (including humans), and Plants.
-
History – children learn about important people, events, and changes from the past, helping them understand how history has shaped the world today.
Other areas of learning, such as Art and Design, Geography, Music, Physical Education (PE), Computing, and Religious Education (RE), also form part of the KS1 curriculum, giving children a broad and balanced education.
